Ordinary People, Extraordinary Difference
By Texas State Representative Ryan Guillen
There's no question as to why we have a national holiday honoring our country's presidents. Serving as the chief executive is a serious feat and requires a great deal of personal sacrifice. In fact, there are very few others who have impacted our society great enough to have a designated day of tribute. However, just because we don’t take the day off of work and shop sales in their honor, we are surrounded by individuals who deserve to be recognized and celebrated for their impact.
Weight of the World
With so much going on in our world today, it is easy to focus on the problems and negative aspects of what’s happening around us. While we are caught up with issues that demand our attention and hard at work to make changes for the better, we can often forget to celebrate the victories. It is also true that we tend to downplay the magnitude of our own wins, which makes it even more important for us to acknowledge and celebrate the successes of one another.
Although not every achievement merits the recognition of a national holiday, even the small accomplishments can make a difference and deserve to be applauded. Through our Community Spotlight program, we want to recognize and honor do-gooders in our communities for their hard work and outstanding achievements.
They may not be a future president or deserving of their own holiday, but if there is someone in your community who has made a positive impact in the lives of other, we want to hear about them. It’s easy to feel like one person can’t make a difference in the world, but by honoring outstanding individuals that have, we can inspire the next ones who will.
