Guillen's Support of UTRGV Medical School  Helps Add Specialty Pediatric Clinic

AUSTIN - Representative Ryan Guillen (D- Rural South Texas), is thrilled to announce that the Valley has a new pediatric specialty clinic. The clinic is run by UTRGV's Medical School, which Guillen was instrumental in creating.

"Healthcare is a vital issue for children and families," said Guillen. "We must do everything we can to increase access to healthcare in the Valley and this clinic marks great progress in that regard."

The new 9,000 square-foot facility in Edinburg has 27 exam rooms, will offer a variety of services such as general, developmental and pulmonary pediatrics, and will treat and research metabolic and genetic disorders. The clinic will start with two specialists on staff and will add four more before the end of the year. It will be home base to the Valley's only clinical geneticist, Dr. Robert Nelson, and Edinburg pediatric pulmonologist Dr. Humberto A. Hidalgo, will help run the facility from its opening date forward. The clinic will employ doctors already practicing in the Valley, as well as some from outside the Valley, who will bring in subspecialties that don’t already exist in the area.

The clinic will accept all types of medical insurance and has self-pay and financial assistance programs for families with limited funds.

Representative Guillen recognizes the importance of healthcare to all members in the community, especially children. It is vital that children are able to have access to preventative healthcare and treatment options if they are sick. Guillen has fought hard to increase access to healthcare in South Texas by increasing the use of telemedicine, advocating for the creation of UTRGV and UTRGV's medical school, and promoting 4 year baccalaureate nursing degrees at public junior colleges.

"This new pediatric clinic helps children have access to doctors," said Guillen. "That is why I support it so strongly and will continue to do so."

Serving ten rural South Texas counties in the Texas House of Representatives, Ryan Guillen is known for his hard work, fierce independence, and relentless efforts for South Texas families. Recently, Capitol Inside called him a “House Bill Machine,” and a “one-person assembly line for legislation.” Since elected, few other legislators have passed more bills than Guillen.
