TEACHERS ENDORSE GUILLEN
The Texas State Teacher's Association Announces Support of Guillen's Re-Election
AUSTIN - The Texas State Teacher's Association (TSTA) announced their endorsement of State Representative Ryan Guillen (D-District 31) for re-election. Guillen expressed that he was honored and humbled to receive the support of Texas teachers.
"As the son and grandson of teachers, and as a former teacher myself, it's an honor to be recognized for the work we've done to improve our public education system," said Guillen. "We've always worked hard on behalf of our students and teachers, and with the continued support of Texas teachers, we'll carry on the fight for greater educational opportunities and fair compensation and benefits for teachers and retirees."
Guillen has worked hard for teachers and students since being elected by the people of South Texas. Since his election, Guillen has reduced over-testing, improved special education programs, expanded dual credit and vocational programs, and consistently fought for better pay, better benefits, and decreased retirement costs for Texas teachers.
In the most recent legislative session, Guillen secured over $1.2 billion to reduce retired teacher healthcare costs, was an author of a bill to add $1.5 billion in additional public school funding, supported "David's Law" to prevent and address the issue of cyberbullying, voted to reduce state-mandated testing, and he was an author of legislation to improve teacher quality.
"Teachers are some of the most important individuals in our community, so we must do everything we can to provide them with the resources they need to do their job," said Guillen. "I am proud to fight for the teachers of South Texas each and every day in office, and I am humbled that they have endorsed my re-election so that I may continue fighting for them."
TSTA is one of the largest and most powerful education associations in Texas and the nation. Over 68,000 Texans are members and over 3.1 million Americans are members of its affiliated organization, the National Education Association.
Serving ten rural South Texas counties in the Texas House of Representatives, Ryan Guillen is known for his hard work, fierce independence, and relentless efforts for South Texas families. Recently, Capitol Inside called him a “House Bill Machine,” and a “one-person assembly line for legislation.” Since elected, few other legislators have passed more bills than Guillen.
