Sales Tax Holiday For Emergency Supplies

AUSTIN - From April 28th-30th, Texans will have the opportunity to purchase certain emergency items without tax. Representative Ryan Guillen (D- Rural South Texas) encourages everyone in District 31 to take advantage of this tax break as Texas prepares for severe weather this spring.

"Lessening the tax burden for South Texans is important," said Guillen. "We do our best to provide Texans with as much relief as possible, and we will continue working to reduce the tax burden in any way we can.”

In the wake of the severe weather of 2017, Representative Guillen hopes that his constituents will take precautions for what could be another season of unpredictable weather. This tax free holiday applies to emergency supplies such as batteries, fuel containers, flashlights, hurricane shutters, emergency ladders, and portable generators. This tax holiday will decrease the financial burden of preparing for an emergency.

Representative Guillen encourages all to take advantage of this tax holiday, as he is a longtime supporter of helping Texans financially through cutting taxes. Guillen supported the homestead tax exemption increase, allowing home owners to lower the value of their home for tax purposes. Guillen was critical to the passage of that bill which increased the homestead exemption from $15,000 to $25,000. In 2015, Guillen was an author of a bill that reduced the franchise tax by 25%. Guillen’s efforts have been successful. Over 6,000 new businesses have opened in the district, the unemployment rate has dropped from over 9% to 6%, and average yearly wages have increased.

"As Harvey showed us last year, Texans should always be prepared for severe weather situations," said Guillen. "Stocking up on emergency supplies is necessary for the upcoming hurricane season."
