GUILLEN EMPHASIZES IMPORTANCE OF ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE
House Continues Hearings on Medicaid Managed Care
AUSTIN - As the House investigates flaws in Texas' Medicaid program, Representative Ryan Guillen (D - Rural South Texas) emphasizes importance of healthcare accessibility.
"Ensuring that South Texans have access to quality and affordable healthcare remains at the forefront of my priorities," said Guillen. "Healthcare is vital to the future of South Texas."
In response to alarming reports from an investigation into HHSC by the Dallas Morning News, which revealed problems in the policies and organization of the Texas Medicaid program, several House committees have begun conducting hearings in a search for answers and solutions. On Monday, the House Committee on Human Services heard invited testimony on the issue.
Representative Guillen has long been a champion of reducing costs and increasing access to healthcare for his constituents. His efforts helped bring a top-tier medical school to the Rio Grande Valley in UTRGV, and Guillen has also passed legislation that capped prescription drug copay costs, helped offer employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities, and made telehealth services cheaper and more accessible. Representative Guillen is committed to providing his community, and all Texans, with the healthcare they deserve.
"We must do better," added Guillen. "No Texan should have to wait months and drive hours for the medical care that they need. I look forward to leading the fight in addressing these problems in the next legislative session."
Serving ten rural South Texas counties in the Texas House of Representatives, Ryan Guillen is known for his hard work, fierce independence, and relentless efforts for South Texas families. Recently, Capitol Inside called him a “House Bill Machine,” and a “one-person assembly line for legislation.” Since elected, few other legislators have passed more bills than Guillen.
