GUILLEN SUPPORTS RURAL HEALTHCARE EXPANSION
House Committee Meets In Hopes of Improving Rural Healthcare
Austin - Representative Ryan Guillen (D- Rural South Texas) hopes the coming hearing of the House committee on Public Health will be a step towards improving the quality and accessibility of rural healthcare for all South Texans.
"It's encouraging to see momentum building as we find ways to improve rural healthcare," said Guillen. "Every Texan deserves quality healthcare regardless of where they live, and I look forward to turning some of the ideas from this meeting into solutions to improve the quality of life in South Texas."
The Committee will review opportunities to improve population health and health care delivery in rural and urban medically underserved areas, with telemedicine being the primary topic of discussion. Telemedicine, real time communication between patient and caregiver in two different locations through audio and visual technology, makes it possible for those in rural areas to still have access to the best and most relevant doctors for their needs. Additionally, the Committee will review challenges facing rural hospitals, identifying them so as to better combat them.
Improving rural healthcare has always been important to Representative Guillen. In the most recent House session, Representative Guillen made telehealth services like telemedicine more affordable and accessible by removing access barriers and secured $500 million for repairs to state supported hospitals and living centers. Guillen is pleased that the meeting is happening, believing in its potential to spark similar legislation.
"There is still much work to be done, but this meeting can be a starting point towards more accessible healthcare in some of Texas' most inaccessible areas," said Guillen. "I look forward to continuing the fight to bring accessible and cheaper healthcare to South Texas."
Serving ten rural South Texas counties in the Texas House of Representatives, Ryan Guillen is known for his hard work, fierce independence, and relentless efforts for South Texas families. Recently, Capitol Inside called him a “House Bill Machine,” and a “one-person assembly line for legislation.” Since elected, few other legislators have passed more bills than Guillen.
