State Officials, Stakeholders to Discuss Low-Cost Housing

AUSTIN - Texas State Representative Ryan Guillen (D- Rural South Texas) is encouraged by recent discussions as the legislature continues to look at addressing affordable housing across the state, an issue Guillen has championed for many years.

"Being a homeowner is the American dream," added Guillen. "Every Texan deserves a place to call their own where they can raise their family. I will continue to fight to make that possible."

Working with the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs' HOME Program, Guillen has been successful in bringing new homes to local families in the Valley. The HOME Program is administered by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) on behalf of the State of Texas. The purpose of the HOME Program is to expand the supply of well-built, safe, affordable housing and strengthen public-private housing partnerships between local governments, public housing authorities, nonprofits, and for profit entities.

Representative Guillen worked with TDHCA's HOME program to bring $522,000 in funds to the City of Roma, which helped finance home repairs for low income homeowners, allowing residents to retain homeownership. In 2014, he was vital in making The Educator, Firefighter and Police Officer Home Loan Program available to families of South Texas, which provided $50 million for educator and first responder home loans. Also in 2014, Guillen was instrumental in the funding and development of a new $7.3 million and 60-unit affordable housing complex in Starr County. TDHCA programs have also helped bring affordable housing to communities elsewhere in Guillen's district, such as in Willacy county.

"The HOME program provides our communities with a way to improve housing conditions for low- to moderate-income families living in homes with serious problems,” said Representative Guillen. “As always, I look forward to working with the state agency and our communities in the future to provide more opportunities like this."

Serving ten rural South Texas counties in the Texas House of Representatives, Ryan Guillen is known for his hard work, fierce independence, and relentless efforts for South Texas families. Recently, Capitol Inside called him a “House Bill Machine,” and a “one-person assembly line for legislation.” Since elected, few other legislators have passed more bills than Guillen.
