GUILLEN SUPPORTS LOANS FOR TEXAS VETERANS

Representative Guillen Emphasizes the Importance of Veterans Issues

AUSTIN - Representative Ryan Guillen (D - Rural South Texas) praised the importance of the Veterans Land Board and their efforts to provide Texas Veterans with accessible and affordable loans as the House Committee on Land and Resource Management met to discuss the issue.

"I am proud to work on behalf of our veterans and their families every day," said Guillen. "They fought to keep us safe and free, now it's our duty to help them and their families."

The Veterans Land Board (VLB) was established by the Texas General Land Office in 1946 to provide Texas veterans with affordable loans for purchasing acreage. The guiding principle of this agency has always been to honor those who would fight and sacrifice so much for Texas. Continuing with this tradition, the VLB has expanded its benefits and now offers, among other things, loans for home purchases and home improvement projects. In addition, the agency is responsible for operating the Texas State Veterans Homes across the state, which offer respectable and long-term care for Texas Veterans, their spouses, and Gold Star parents.

Representative Guillen supports the VLB and their work to ensure veterans and their families in Texas have access to the resources they've earned. During the last Legislative Session, Guillen was an author of a bill that prohibited tuition fee increases for veterans and their families in college on the Hazlewood Act, and he helped secure more funding to provide greater mental health care programs for veterans. Guillen also was an author of a bill that cut red tape for veterans regarding property taxes, and he was a sponsor of legislation that increased property tax exemptions for veteran and their surviving spouses who receive charitably donated homes.

"Access to affordable land and home loans is an important issue to all Texans," said Guillen. "We must do everything we can to make sure Texas veterans can live on the land they've fought to defend."

Serving ten rural South Texas counties in the Texas House of Representatives, Ryan Guillen is known for his hard work, fierce independence, and relentless efforts for South Texas families. Recently, Capitol Inside called him a “House Bill Machine,” and a “one-person assembly line for legislation.” Since elected, few other legislators have passed more bills than Guillen.
