Representative Guillen And The Legislature Officially Thanks Jurors

AUSTIN- During the 84th Legislative Session, Representative Ryan Guillen (D - Rural South Texas) passed a bill that designated the first week of May as Jury Appreciation Week. This year will be the second of such weeks, and Representative Guillen would like to extend another 'thank you' to jurors.

"Our courts and our justice system are important to the wellbeing of Texas citizens, our economic and personal safety, our land, our resources, and especially our democracy," said Guillen. "Jurors are a crucial part of our justice system. Jurors should get our appreciation and recognition for their service. That's why we've created Jury Appreciation Week."

Jurors are an integral part of our court systems, but not all Texans have the ability to utilize their legal rights. Many local courts in Texas  require individuals to pay high monetary feeds in order file civil cases, essentially barring lower-income citizens from accessing them. Representative Guillen recognizes the importance of and right to access legal services, which is why he supports efforts to reduce arbitrarily high legal filing fees and increase access to justice for South Texans.

"It is important we continue to strive for the best in Texas," stated Guillen. "Texas courts and legal systems are an important aspect of everyday living. They are here for the benefit of the people, and it is unjust if only certain people have access to it, for economic or other reasons."

Serving ten rural South Texas counties in the Texas House of Representatives, Ryan Guillen is known for his hard work, fierce independence, and relentless efforts for South Texas families. Recently, Capitol Inside called him a “House Bill Machine,” and a “one-person assembly line for legislation.” Since elected, few other legislators have passed more bills than Guillen.
