GUILLEN REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO MILITARY VETS AND FAMILIES

Representative Guillen Advocates for the  Importance of Veterans' Issues

AUSTIN - Ahead of tomorrow's Defense and Veterans' Affairs Committee meeting in San Antonio, Representative Ryan Guillen (D - Rural South Texas) took a moment to speak about the issues Texas military veterans face and their successful transition into civilian life.

"I am honored to work on behalf of our veterans and their families every day," said Guillen. "They fought to keep us safe and free, so now it's our duty to help them and their families as they re-enter civilian life."

Guillen has been crucial in creating legislation that helps ensure veterans and their families in Texas have access to the resources they have earned in exchange for their duty and bravery. Guillen was an author of legislation that prohibited tuition fee increases for veterans and their families in universities, while also securing more funding to provide greater mental health care programs for veterans. He also cut red tape for veterans regarding property taxes on their homes, and amended the Constitution to help disabled veterans and their surviving spouses qualify for property tax exemptions.

Guillen also created and improved the Hazlewood and Hazlewood Legacy Act in Texas which allows military veterans to go to college for free or transfer this privilege to their spouses and children.

"It is a blessing to be able to represent the many veterans in Texas that dedicated their lives to serve and protect our great nation," said Guillen. "We must strive to continue supporting veterans and voicing their concerns within the Legislature."

Serving ten rural South Texas counties in the Texas House of Representatives, Ryan Guillen is known for his hard work, fierce independence, and relentless efforts for South Texas families. Recently, Capitol Inside called him a “House Bill Machine,” and a “one-person assembly line for legislation.” Since elected, few other legislators have passed more bills than Guillen.
