GUILLEN CELEBRATES TEXAS HISTORY
Urges South Texans To Nominate A Champion Of Texas History And Heritage
AUSTIN - Representative Ryan Guillen (D - Rural South Texas) encourages South Texans to honor Texas' incredible history and culture by nominating community members for Texas Historical Commission awards of recognition for their contributions to preserving Texas history.
"Whether it's passing it down to the next generation, or to folks visiting from out of town, we're always looking to preserve and teach our history," said Guillen. "Texas is one of the most unique and important states in the US, and we should honor those who do their part to pass on our history."
The Texas Historical Commission is currently accepting applications for a variety of different awards. The first group of awards will be in the form of a grant that will go towards preserving untold Texas historical markers that address historical gaps and promote diversity of topics and cultures. The Commission can assist local sponsors and County Historical Commissions with selected topics by paying for the cost of a historical marker, or by assisting with the research necessary to submit and complete an application.
The Commission is also accepting applications for nominations of individuals who have made worthwhile accomplishments in and have shown exemplary leadership towards the preservation of Texas' history and heritage.
Finally, the THC is also holding a free summer workshop that teaches how to research and apply for an Official Texas Historical Marker for your community. They are free, online workshops, and can be accessed by the public at thc.texas.gov/learn/training-consulting. Please visit the website for a schedule of the workshops, which will be held on different days throughout the summer.
"Texas history will live on forever," said Guillen. "But we must continue to take the steps now to make sure that our history makes it into the future."
A full list of awards can be found at www.thc.texas.gov/awards.
