Guillen And  Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs' HOME Program Help Get Seven New Homes Built In Lyford

AUSTIN - Representative Ryan Guillen (D - Rural South Texas) is determined to bring affordable housing to South Texas families. The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs' HOME program, has been instrumental in aiding his efforts in Willacy County.

"This program provides our communities with a way to improve housing conditions for low- to moderate-income families living in homes with serious problems,” said Guillen. "So I work hard to make sure that Texans in our communities can access this program."

The HOME Program is administered by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) primarily in rural parts of the state. The purpose of HOME is to expand the supply of decent, safe, affordable housing and strengthen public-private housing partnerships between units of general local governments, public housing authorities, nonprofits, and for profit entities. TDHCA contracts with these units of to provide affordable housing to lower income families in their communities.

Guillen has been devoted to bringing affordable housing to families in South Texas. In 2014, he was vital in making the Educator, Firefighter and Police Officer Home Loan Program, which aids educators and first responders with the purchase of a house in the area in which they work, available to families of South Texas. In 2012, Guillen worked with TDHCA's HOME program to bring $522,000 in funds to the City of Roma, which helped finance home repairs for low income homeowners. In 2014, he was instrumental in the funding and development of a new $7.3 million 60-unit affordable housing complex in Starr County.

"Being a homeowner is the American dream," added Guillen. "People of the South Texas community deserve to own their own home, and I will continue to fight to make that possible."

Serving ten rural South Texas counties in the Texas House of Representatives, Ryan Guillen is known for his hard work, fierce independence, and relentless efforts for South Texas families. Recently, Capitol Inside called him a “House Bill Machine,” and a “one-person assembly line for legislation.” Since elected, few other legislators have passed more bills than Guillen.
