Eligible Individuals Can Save Up To $15,000 A Year For Disability Costs

AUSTIN - Representative Ryan Guillen (D- Rural South Texas) applauds the opening of the Texas Achieving a Better Life Experience (Texas ABLE®) Program for enrollment. This program is available to disabled individuals at least 18 years old and allows them to save up to $15,000 per year without the risk of losing their disability benefits.

"As Texans we should be helping each other live life to the fullest, especially those who have suffered a disability," said Guillen. "This program moves us one step closer to achieving this goal."

Rep. Guillen and the rest of the Texas Legislature voted to create the Texas ABLE® Program during the 84th Legislative Session. The purpose of the program is to help individuals and families save money in order to maintain their quality of life. With an ABLE account, an individual can save up to $15,000 a year and are allowed up to $100,000 in their account to be generally disregarded for determining eligibility to receive government benefits. Additionally, an individual can make withdrawals for qualified disability expenses tax-free.

"Financial independence allows a person to secure their future," said Guillen. "With this program now open, disabled Texans will be able to save money without worrying about losing their benefits."
